Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which day events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and celebrated in more than 192 countries each year
How did it Start?
Earth Day was first held in 1970 in the United States. Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson came up with the idea as a way to pressure the U.S. government to pass environmental protection legislation. That first Earth Day preceded the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the adoption of the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts.
How is the event celebrated today?
Events are being held around the world to celebrate Earth Day 2015: people are picking up litter at the Great Wall of China, planting trees in Dubai, cleaning beaches in the Dominican Republic and Lebanon, and holding fairs, seminars, and festivals on sustainability in dozens of cities.
According to Earth Day Canada, more than six million Canadians – including all school-aged children – will participate in Earth Day events.
Some companies are also using the day as a marketing opportunity. VIA Rail Canada is offering to double members’ points if they book train travel between Apr. 22-28, while Amazon is offering deals on products offered by “environmentally aware partners.”
Starbucks is also giving away free coffee to anyone that brings his or her own mug into the store.
The Event clearly holds a special place for people all over the world! Efforts are being all around to protect the only home we have (well so far atleast)!
